For Highlife Property Group's Craftsmanship Series, we spent a day with Yoshi Takeda, a surfboard shaper who grew up between the snowy mountains and the sea in Hokkaido, fell hard for surfing at eighteen, and left Japan at twenty to learn how to build a board properly. He landed in Australia and never left. Close to two decades on, he shapes under his own name out of a workshop in Currumbin, making everything from classic longboards and retro fishes to high-performance shortboards, each one custom to the person who'll ride it. We filmed him at the work, the blank taking shape under his hands, the dust, the sanding, the quiet focus of someone who still says he's learning after all these years. The series exists to honour the makers whose craft ends up in Highlife's world. Yoshi is one of them, and a day in his shaping bay is a lesson in what it looks like to chase excellence for its own sake.
